A new study shows that simple movements and deep breathing that are done during the practice of "tai chi" exercises can be just as beneficial as regular exercise to reduce the spread of middle-aged diseases and reduce waist circumference, according to the British "Daily Mail".

Tai Chi is a form of mind-body exercise described as on-the-go meditation and practiced by millions around the world to improve health and alertness.

Researchers from the Universities of California and Hong Kong tracked the waist size of study volunteers who either didn't do any exercise or tai chi for 12 weeks.

They also found that tai chi exercises are as effective as traditional exercises for reducing the waist circumference of obese middle-aged and older adults.

The study focused on people who suffer from a condition known as central obesity, which is excess weight that forms mostly around the waist area.

Central obesity is a major manifestation of metabolic syndrome, a common health problem in middle-aged adults.

Study participants performed two groups of tai chi and traditional exercise for one hour three times a week for 12 weeks under the supervision of professional trainers.

The tai chi training program relied on the Yang style of tai chi, which is the most common method, while traditional exercises varied between brisk walking and strength training activities.

Reduce waist circumference

The researchers also discovered, when measuring waist circumference and other indicators of metabolic health after 12 weeks and then 38, a reduction in the waist circumference of participants from the tai chi and traditional exercise groups, compared to the control group. Reducing waist circumference had a positive effect on HDL cholesterol, but it did not translate into detectable differences in glucose or blood pressure.

According to the researchers, the results are that middle-aged and elderly adults with central obesity can benefit from reducing their waist circumference with minimal effort if they do not prefer or cannot do traditional exercise due to limited mobility or any other reasons. other.
