How do you treat yourself from annoying nightmares?

There are many causes for frequent and annoying nightmares, and they range from stress and sleep disturbances to certain health conditions. Also, there are factors such as lifestyle, eating certain foods or a wrong bedtime routine that ultimately result in a feeling of discomfort at night. But, in general, nightmares can be treated at home.

Nightmares are dreams with negative themes that elicit tension, sadness, or fear for those who see them, and are more common in children than adults. If not handled, it can lead to insomnia, decreased productivity during the day and poor sleep quality. Improper sleeping position, unhealthy eating habits, stress, and underlying health conditions are likely to be causes of nightmares.

Some home remedies

A specialist should be consulted in cases of diseases and disorders. But for other triggers such as anxiety, stress and poor bedtime habits, the following home remedies can be effective:

• Avoid spicy foods:

Diets that contain a lot of spices, pickles, or foods that are generally difficult to digest, affect sleep continuity as the body's metabolism rises and has to work harder to digest food, resulting in increased brain activity and messing with rapid eye movement cycles , which increases the chances of having nightmares.

• Eat early and smaller meals:

Certain foods and fruits help to avoid nightmares or sleep well, such as bananas, kiwis, walnuts, and almonds. Eating late also disrupts the body's sleep cycle, which works to digest food. When the sleep cycle is interrupted, a person can remember their dreams, often including nightmares, meaning that the effect of the nightmares will be prolonged.

• Exercise and relax during the day:

If a person feels that their increased stress levels are ruining their dream life, they should take the initiative to prevent it from happening. The day can begin with exercise or a walk in the morning and take short breaks during the day to fully relax the body.

• Reduce watching horror movies:

Some people watch horror movies late in the day, which is a completely unsuitable step for dream content when sleeping, as it may keep some awake at night or suffer from nightmares while sleeping.

• Imagine a better end to the nightmare:

A person can relax and quietly review the events of the entire nightmare with the realization that it is only a dream and cannot happen in reality. He could eventually imagine a better ending, for example, if a monster was chasing after him during a dream, he could try to befriend or domesticate him instead of running away in fear.

• Control of lucid dreams:

When a person imagines a better end to his dream during the day, he can repeat the experience in a lucid dream, that is, during cases where a person realizes that he is seeing a dream. In the case of recurring nightmares, a shift from mere vision to control over the course of events in the nightmare, or when the mind becomes aware that it is merely a negative dream, can help and the narrative can be altered as one wishes.
