How can the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome be reduced?

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the common diseases in the world, and the proportion of people with this syndrome ranges from 10-20% globally. The patient suffers from severe abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in defecation such as constipation or diarrhea, as a result of mutual nervous signals that occur between the brain and the intestines.

Lead to an imbalance in the movement of the intestinal muscles. The condition occurs or intensifies after eating some foods, physical or psychological stress, hormonal changes, and some antibiotics. The patient is surprised by a bout of pain in the abdominal area with constipation or diarrhea, flatulence, and sometimes a feeling of not emptying the intestines completely.

To relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome

1- It is recommended to avoid products containing lactose and sorbitol for a trial period to check whether there will be a change in symptoms during changing the diet because the lack of absorption of these components may lead to a feeling of bloating, gas and diarrhea.

2- It is also recommended to avoid a group of other food products that cause gas and bloating, such as beans - cabbage - fresh onions - grapes - coffee (caffeine).

3- Follow a diet rich in fiber (between 20-30 grams per day). Dietary fiber helps prevent constipation, but it is preferable to eat it in small quantities and then gradually increase the dose.

4- You should drink 8-10 glasses of fluids daily.

5- Eat regular and fixed meals.

6- Do regular physical activity.

7- Avoid stress as much as possible.

8- Then comes the role of medications that can help alleviate some symptoms, especially when not responding, including: fiber-rich supplements, anti-diarrheal drugs, anticholinergic drugs, antidepressant drugs….
