What is the relationship between narcissism and frequent use of mobile phones?

A new study shows that people with high levels of narcissistic traits are more likely to be addicted to their phones.

Researchers at Alexandru Ioan Cusa University in Romania discovered that narcissists tend to have an inflated sense of self-importance, which can manifest as a need for admiration and a sense of entitlement, much of which can be gained through social media interactions, such as receiving “likes” on their posts, According to what was published by the British “Daily Mail”, citing the journal Psychology.

Narcissistic traits

Among 559 post-secondary school and college students, ages 18 to 45, those who scored higher on a scale of narcissistic traits were more likely to experience significant levels of nomophobia.

These individuals also showed greater signs of stress, and tended to show stronger signs of social media addiction.

It has also been shown that nomophobia, narcissism, stress, and social media addiction all affect each other. Specifically, the researchers' evidence suggests that social media addiction and nomophobia explain the relationship between narcissism and stress levels.

Questions in the questionnaire

The researchers asked volunteer participants in the study to complete an online questionnaire, which included assessments measuring narcissism, stress, symptoms of social media addiction, and nomophobia, which is a combination of “phobia of missing a mobile phone,” which occurs when a person feels as if he has lost a part of himself when he is without his mobile phone. .

The questionnaire also included questions about nomophobia, including, for example: “Do you feel uncomfortable without constant access to information through a smartphone?”

Another question about social media addiction said: “How many times during the past year have you used social media so much that it has had a negative impact on your job/studies?”

Higher levels of stress

The results revealed that the students, who scored higher on the narcissism scale, also had higher scores on the ratings of social media addiction and nomophobia.

Those with severe social media addiction and nomophobia also reported higher levels of stress.

Intermediate roles

“The most important findings of the current study relate to the mediating roles of social media addiction and nomophobia on the relationship between narcissism and stress,” the researchers wrote, as they conducted a statistical analysis that revealed the possible relationship between all these factors.

“As hypothesized, individuals high in narcissism may be more susceptible to developing this behavioral addiction, which may lead to increased levels of stress,” the researchers added.
