Peripheral neuropathy is not a single disease, in fact it is nerve damage caused by a number of conditions. Causes of neuropathies include:

1- Diabetes mellitus (diabetic neuropathy).

2- Radical peripheral neuropathy due to problems with the spine and vertebrae.

3- Trauma or pressure on the nerve: Trauma, such as car accidents, falls or sports injuries, can cut or damage peripheral nerves. It can be caused by compression of nerves by a cast, the use of crutches, or the repetition of a movement such as writing.

4- Vitamin deficiency: The B vitamins (including B-1, B-6, and B-12), vitamin D and niacin are important for nerve integrity.

5- Hypothyroidism.

6- Medications: Certain medications, especially those used to treat cancer (chemotherapy), can cause this.

7. Autoimmune diseases: These include Sjögren's syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic demyelinating polyneuritis and necrotizing vasculitis.

8- Alcohol addiction.

9- Exposure to toxins. Toxic substances include heavy metals or chemicals.

10- Infection: This includes certain bacterial or viral infections including Lyme disease, herpes zoster (varicella zoster), Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C, leprosy, diphtheria and HIV.

11- Inherited disorders. Disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are hereditary types of neuropathy.

12- Tumors: Cancerous (malignant) and non-cancerous (benign) growths can affect the nerves themselves or can increase pressure on the surrounding nerves

Polyneuropathy can also arise as a result of some types of cancer associated with the body's immune response.

13- Bone marrow disorders: myeloma due to osteosclerosis, lymphoma, amyloidosis and others.

14- Other diseases: include kidney disease, liver disease...
