What are the side effects of chemotherapy on the skin?

Chemotherapy affects the protection provided by the skin barrier, disrupting the growth of keratinocytes, as well as disrupting the immune cells that are located in the skin to protect it from harmful environmental factors. Not all chemical drugs cause skin side effects, as this depends on the type and duration of treatment.

These are the most common side effects of chemotherapy on the skin:

Irritated and itchy skin:
Dry, scaly skin often turns itchy and irritated during chemotherapy. The situation may be made worse by some chemotherapy drugs, and therefore, it needs to be taken care of as soon as possible.

Sunburn or rash:
Some steroids used in chemotherapy can make the skin susceptible to sunburn or acne rashes due to sensitivity to light. Therefore, it is best to protect your skin from the sun, with your doctor's instructions for that.

pigmentation :
Sometimes, a patient may experience temporary changes in their skin color during chemotherapy. Browning, redness, or other similar changes should be reported to the physician and treated accordingly.
