It seems that kitchen decor and necessities are no longer complemented by colored kitchen towels. On the contrary, a recent study revealed that the use of kitchen towels for multiple purposes may lead to food poisoning.
Researchers at the University of Mauritius examined more than XNUMX towels used in the kitchen for a month.
The examination revealed that E. coli bacteria are often found in towels that are used for various purposes, such as cleaning tools and surfaces and drying hands.

The results also indicated that wet towels used by meat-eating families also contain E. coli bacteria.
Using the same towel for more than one purpose increases the chances of bacteria spreading and may eventually lead to food poisoning.
The results of this study were presented at the annual conference of the American Society for Microbiology in Georgia, USA.

The examination proved that 49% of the towels grow bacteria, which increases the chances of this happening with the increase in the number of family members and the presence of children among them.

E. coli is a bacteria that spreads in the intestines of humans and animals, and most of them are of a harmless type, but some of them may cause poisoning and serious infections.
"The data suggests that unhygienic practices while handling non-vegetarian foods may lead to the spread of these types of bacteria in the kitchen," said lead researcher Sushila Prangya Hurdial.
She added, "It should be cautioned against the use of wet towels, which are used for more than one purpose. Family members with children and adults should also pay attention to hygienic practices in the kitchen.”
The study also indicated that Astaphylococcus bacteria spread among families from low socioeconomic levels.
This type of bacteria may lead to food poisoning, as it multiplies rapidly at room temperature, which may cause disease, and can be eliminated by cooking and pasteurization.
