Omega starts counting down before 2020

From the start of the Olympic Games and Special Olympics Tokyo

As the official timekeeper for the Olympic and Special Olympics Games, OMEGA celebrates today the start of the countdown to the Tokyo 2020 Games after exactly one year with the Olympic and Special Olympics Organizing Committee in Tokyo. To mark the occasion, the curtain was proudly drawn from the official countdown clock at Marunouchi Square in downtown Tokyo.

The unique clock is approximately 4 meters long and is inspired by the rising sun, the symbol of Japan and is among the components of the Tokyo 2020 emblems. On one side, the watch records the countdown to the start of the Olympic Games on July 24, while on the other side it records the countdown to the start of the Games Special Olympics on August 25.

The countdown was unleashed in the presence of Christoph Savius, President and Representative of Swatch Group Japan, joined by Yoshiro Mori, President of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, Alan Zobrist, CEO of Omega Timing, and John Coates, Member of the International Olympic Committee.

Also in attendance were dignitaries, including the Games' host city representative and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, and President and CEO of East Japan Railways Yuji Fukasawa.

Christoph Savius said, “I am absolutely proud to be representing OMEGA and the Swatch Group in Japan during these wonderful times. There is great anticipation and enthusiasm among all those working for the brand as well as in the host city.”

John Coates also commented on the event, saying, “We are fortunate to share this important moment with OMEGA, who have always been a partner of the IOC. It takes timekeeping accuracy to a higher level and provides a pivotal experience at the Olympic Games and the athletes who compete in them.”

In turn, Alain Zobrist said, “Tokyo is a host city with long tradition and modern technology, which are the same characteristics as OMEGA's timekeeping. I am sure this Olympic Games will always be remembered.”

To celebrate this special occasion, Alan Zubris presented Yoshiro Moore the last lap of the Omega bell. These historic timekeeping pieces are still used today in some Olympic Games and signify a close relationship between sport and Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship.

Omega is also grateful for the support it received from the Government of Tokyo and the special contribution from the East Japan Railway Company, which was a vital partner in the process of placing the countdown clock in such a strategic location in the city.

OMEGA is the Official Timekeeper of the Tokyo 2020 Games and in doing so is in that role for the 1932th time since XNUMX. In addition to recording the athletes' historical dreams, the brand is constantly contributing to the development and advancement of many of the timekeeping technologies used in the world of sport.

In its preparations over the next year, OMEGA is introducing two limited-edition watches to coincide with the countdown a year before the Olympic Games. 2020 releases pieces of both models:

  • The Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition watch is made of stainless steel with a blue ceramic dial with a laser engraving inspired by the Tokyo Olympic Games logo, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games logo is beautifully transferred onto the sapphire crystal caseback.
