They discovered that in 2014, 460 tonnes of wild fish were used to produce 179 tonnes of salmon.

Moreover, 76% of the fish caught in the wild were of species commonly eaten by humans, such as anchovies and sardines.

By analyzing these numbers on a global scale, scientists have estimated that if the fish caught from the seas and oceans were to be used as food for humans instead of being used as is currently happening as salmon feed, nearly 4 million tons of fish, which are currently caught in the sea every year, could be left behind. year, and then they will become larger and become an available source as human food.

In the study, published in the journal PLOS Sustainability and Transformation, the researchers acknowledge that their figures are based on one country's salmon production over a single year, so more large-scale research would be needed, although it is believed that subsequent studies will paint a similar picture.

They added that "allowing salmon production to increase through the current approach will place extraordinary pressure on global fish stocks."

The results suggest that reducing the volume of wild fish used to produce feed for farmed salmon may relieve pressure on wild fish stocks while increasing the supply of wild fish feed for human consumption.
