A study on the prevalence of acne and its predisposition

The problem of acne affects 1 in 5 people at some point in their lives. This is what was revealed by the largest international study that addressed this common cosmetic problem, and showed that women are more susceptible to it than men.

The increase in sebum secretions, blackheads, and pimples is considered one of the most prominent manifestations of acne in adulthood and affects 28,3% of adolescents and young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 years, and also in the mature stage it affects 19,3% of adults aged Between 25 and 39 years). This is what was stated in a French study, the results of which were published on March 18, 2024.

Its data showed that 23,6% of women suffer from acne, while this percentage among men reaches 17,5%. The study revealed that the prevalence of this cosmetic problem is the lowest in Europe (9,7%) and in the Australian continent (10,8%). The geographical regions most affected in this area are Latin America (23,9%), then the East. Asia (20,2%), Africa (18,5%) and the Middle East (16,1%).

The numbers speak

The numbers we mentioned are considered serious, especially since this problem, which is classified as cosmetic, has repercussions on various aspects of life. Statistics indicate that 50% of people who suffer from acne also suffer from fatigue, while 41% of them suffer from difficulty sleeping as a result of suffering from itching, tingling, sensitivity, or pain accompanying acne. It is noteworthy that 44% of people with acne become more cautious about their spending, 27% of them give up activities they are interested in, and 31% of them change their projects. This means that morale is also affected in this area, especially since 31% of those affected feel excluded or rejected by others, 27% of them feel that people avoid touching them, and 26% of them feel that people refuse to approach them.

The role of psychological stress

This study also indicates that psychological stress may be a primary cause of acne in 40% of women between the ages of 25 and 40. The hormone cortisol, which is known as the psychological stress hormone, causes acne when its secretions increase.

Since we live in a society where stress prevails, it is not surprising that many women suffer from the problem of acne, but during adolescence, hormonal disorders cause this problem. If some types of fast foods and sweets increase the problem of acne, chronic fatigue and physical stress generate a type of oxidative stress that contributes to premature aging of the skin and causes acne.
