What is the relationship of mental disorders to corona?

Based on research, scientists reported that one out of every 3 people recovering from corona in a study that included more than 230 patients, most of them Americans, suffered from brain disorders or psychological disorders within 6 months, indicating that the pandemic may lead to a wave of mental and neurological problems. .

The researchers who conducted the analysis said it was not clear how the virus was linked to psychological problems such as anxiety and depression, but these two symptoms were among the most common disorders out of 14 they investigated.

They added that cases of stroke, dementia and other neurological disorders were much rarer in the post-Covid-19 stage, but they still exist, especially among those who developed the disease in its severe form.

In turn, Max Tackett, a psychiatrist at Oxford University, who co-led the research work, explained that the results indicate that brain diseases and mental disorders are more common after Covid-19 than after influenza or other respiratory diseases, according to a report carried by "Reuters".

He added that the study was not able to determine the biological or psychological mechanisms that lead to this, but there is a need for urgent research to identify those mechanisms in order to prevent or treat them.

20% are actually injured

It is worth noting that health experts are concerned about evidence of an increased risk of brain and mental health disorders among those recovering from Covid-19.

A previous study by the same researchers last year showed that 20% of those recovering from corona developed mental disorders within 3 months.

After analyzing the medical records of up to 236379 COVID-19 patients, mostly from the United States, the new findings, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, found that 34% had developed a neurological or psychiatric illness within 6 months.

Corona has a big impact

The scientists said that disorders were more common among Covid-19 patients compared to groups who recovered from influenza or other forms of respiratory infection during the same period, indicating that the Corona virus has a significant impact in this regard.

In addition, the percentage of those who were worried about recovering from corona reached 17%, while the percentage of those who suffered from mood disorders reached 14%, which makes them the most common disorders in the post-Covid-19 stage, and they did not appear to be related to the extent of the weakness or severity of the injury.

Among those admitted to intensive care units with COVID-19, 6% had a stroke within 7 months, and nearly 2% developed dementia.

It is noteworthy that the American "Johns Hopkins University" had reported, on Monday, that the total number of coronavirus infections in the world had risen to more than 131.2 million cases, and the total deaths had reached more than 2.8 million.

According to the data, the total number of coronavirus infections in the world has reached 131,212,766, and the total number of deaths is 2,845,462.
