The sudden death of director Shawki Mejri

Today, the Tunisian director, Shawki Mejri, died after suffering a sudden heart attack at dawn Thursday in Cairo. He was subsequently transferred to a hospital to be announced his death.

The news, which was confirmed by Tunisian media, was announced by lawyer Habib bin Zayed, friend of the late director, in an intervention with a Tunisian radio station, indicating that he had received a call from the late director's nephew, as well as the artist Saba Mubarak, who confirmed to him the news of the death.

He confirmed that the late director was in Cairo in order to prepare for a new series, and that there was communication with the Tunisian embassy in Egypt in order to transfer the body and bury it in Tunisia.

Shawqi, who passed away at the age of 58, was born in November 1961, and presented many works that the audience was attached to in the Arab world, most notably “Asmahan”, “Free Fall” and “Kingdom of Ants”.

And Mohamed, the nephew of the late director, explained, during a telephone interview to him on the “Sabah Al-Nas Al-Youm” program, that Al-Majri, who had been residing in Cairo, fell ill for days, and was taken to the hospital late last night, where he suffered an angina at the hospital entrance. As a result, he died. He added that Boyhood Mubarak, the divorced wife of the Tunisian director, is the one who informed the family of the news, noting that Ammar, the son of the deceased, lives with his mother, Saba, in Jordan.

Producer Sadiq Al-Sabah, owner of the “Sabah Brothers” company, which produced the latest work of Majri’s series “A Minute of Silence”, mourned the Tunisian director, saying in a tweet through his account on “Twitter”: “A minute of silence, and a lot of pain for a creative departure. Director Shawki Majri in the protection of God. We belong to Allah, and to him we shall return".

While the hero of the work, the Syrian actor Abed Fahd, tweeted: “A journey that ended with a minute of silence… a minute of silence for the soul of the brother and friend, the creative director Shawki Al-Majri, a journey that began in 2009 in the series “Asmahan” followed by “Kingdom of Ants”, “relative calm” and ended with a minute of silence … Goodbye Shawqi Mejri.

In turn, actress Stephanie Saliba wrote: "A minute of silence is not enough... Shawqi Al-Majri to Nour Allah."

Actress Hind Sabri called her son, saying: "Today a great director passed away. He confirmed through all his works that art does not contain one country or one place... The director of my country, who deserves the title of a great Arab director, Shawqi Al-Majri, may God have mercy on him and forgive him."

The Lebanese actress, Carmen Lebbes, revealed the details of the last meeting that she gathered with Majri, in a tweet in which she said: "How ugly is this news, since a week ago we met and told me how I longed to return to the cinema, and we agreed that we will continue our conversation in Tunisia at the Carthage Festival... You are very early, may God have mercy on you and give patience to your family."

As for the media, Wafaa Al-Kilani, she wrote: “In the protection of God, the great Tunisian director Shawki Majri... May God have mercy on him and give patience to his family.”
