Eating at a specific time has surprising effects

While ideal weight and a lean body have become a concern of many around the world, a new study published indicates that time-restricted feeding also known as “TRE” leads to positive effects on gene activity in laboratory mice.

The effects of timed eating have been shown to affect 22 different types of tissues throughout the body, including the heart, lungs, liver, brain and intestines.

According to the researchers, nearly 80% of all genes showed better performance under TRF in at least one tissue, suggesting that future research could direct the use of TRE to treat various disease conditions in humans, according to the journal Cell Metabolism.

Time restricted feeding

Time-restricted eating is a popular form of intermittent fasting, which involves eating only during specific hours of the day and fasting for the rest of the day, explains Shireen Jegetvig, a registered dietitian and researcher who teaches at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

Other forms of intermittent fasting (IF) are more difficult, she added, and involve fasting for an entire day now and then or restricting calorie intake to about 500 or so each day.

Water, tea and coffee

The study's principal investigator, Professor Satchidananda Panda, who holds the Rita and Richard Atkinson Chair at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, described TRE as restricting caloric intake to a fixed, regular period of time each day, leaving a period of time between Between 12 to 18 hours without consuming any nutrients.

Panda indicated that there is no explicit limit on energy consumption during eating hours, explaining that the TRE system allows water consumption at any time without restrictions, and in some cases, non-high-calorie drinks such as unsweetened tea or unsweetened coffee are even allowed.

The professor also suggested that the fasting period be allocated to the individual based on his sleep time and schedule, given that the fasting community often uses the term “intermittent fasting” or “IF” to refer to systems other than time-restricted eating, the TRE for humans (or TRF for studies on Animals) is the more accurate term to use.”

health benefits

Professor Panda added, “It has been scientifically proven that time-restricted eating prevents, helps to live with, or improves or cures many diseases in some cases,” including:

Glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, fatty liver disease, chronic infections, sleep disturbances, age-dependent decline in cardiac function.

Time-restricted eating can also help in weight loss, as Jigtvig explained that the time-restricted feeding method can reduce the amount of food eaten, because it affects insulin levels and the appetite hormone.

It is noteworthy that the study indicated that a person who follows a time-restricted eating method (TRE) or any other form of intermittent fasting (IF), should take into account the selection of healthy foods during the period of time in which food is allowed.

There should also be limited space for occasional snacks and sweets in the diet.
